NBA Eastern Conference Finals DFS Preview
It took Toronto to the very last second of Game 7 vs. Philadelphia but alas, here the Raptors are, ready to face Milwaukee in the Eastern Conference Finals. This is a series highlighted by two stars - Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo - but one that will ultimately be settled (DFS wise) by the role players. It should be a good one, 7 games are nearly inevitable.
How Each Team Got Here
Toronto has had a pretty tough go of it so far in the postseason - generally speaking. The Raptors showed some weaknesses in the first game of the playoffs in a loss to Orlando before rallying for 4 straight wins. The 76ers also put up a fight, but Toronto pulled off the advancement in 7 games.
Milwaukee seems like a cat with a dead bird so far in the postseason - bored and just playing with it. The Bucks swept Detroit in Round 1, and rallied after a loss to Boston to win 4 straight in Round 2. One would have to put Mike Budenholzer's team as huge favorites to advance to the NBA Finals.
Top Tier Players
It's a star-studded Conference Finals at the top tier with Milwaukee and Toronto both boasting an MVP Candidate:
Kawhi Leonard (DK: $9,900 FD: $10,500 Y! $44)
One of the two alpha dogs in this series is undoubtedly Kawhi Leonard. His last second shot doomed Philadelphia and Leonard scored 50+ fantasy points in 5 of 7 games vs. the Sixers. Leonard shot the ball 39 times in Game 7, so it's no secret who the Toronto offense runs through. The Raptors were held under 100 points in 2 of 4 games vs. the Bucks in the regular season, and Leonard averaged just 18ppg during those two contests.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (DK: $10,200 FD: $12,000 Y! $56) Ownership
The other Big Hoss to watch in the Eastern Conference Finals is obviously Milwaukee's MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek Freak ripped through the Celtics tough defense with 29+ points in three of the last four including averaging 70fp in the two games in Boston. Antetokounmpo was held to 19 points in two of the games he played against Toronto this season, but erupted for 43 points and 18 rebounds in Milwaukee.
Mid Tier Options
Khris Middleton (DK: $6,900 FD: $7,500 Y!: $31)
Milwaukee has some nice second tier scoring options to attack in this series, the best - or at least most consistent - of which is probably Khris Middleton. The SG/SF had at least 15 shots in 3 of the last 4 vs. Boston. He may not have the huge ceiling, but Middleton also scored between 38 and 41 points in 4 of 5 vs. the stingy Celtics defense.
Pascal Siakam (DK: $6,700 FD: $7,600 Y!: $32)
Toronto's Pascal Siakam is nearly a top tier play in this series the way he has broken out this season. That being said, the Raptors' PF isn't a sure thing just yet. For example, he scored just 11 points at home in a crucial Game 7 vs. Philadelphia and was held to 9 in Game 4. Siakam does have upside though, as he put in 20+ in the other 5 games of the series and had a ceiling of 46 in Game 5. The matchup with Antetokounmpo might drain Siakam a bit, but the Raptors need to find somebody besides Leonard to score consistently.
Eric Bledsoe (DK: $5,800 FD: $5,500 Y! $28)
Is it going to be Eric Bledsoe or Brook Lopez for your mid-tier ceiling guy for Milwaukee? Some would say Lopez the way Joel Embiid attacked the Toronto front court in Round 2, but the Bucks big man broke 19 fantasy points just once in the 5 games vs. Boston. Bledsoe went for 25+ fp in 3 of the last 4 vs. the Celtics, but he also had a 50 point fantasy night in Round 1 vs. Detroit. This is a spotlight series, so expect Bledsoe to be launching with all the eyes on him.
Kyle Lowry (DK: $6,100, FD: $6,900, Y! $28)
Kyle Lowry will have every chance to be Toronto's second scoring option in this series but he's had a very mediocre playoffs thus far. At the very least, Lowry gets minutes (37+ in 6 of 7 vs. Philadelphia) but his high point total was 20 vs. the Sixers. Lowry is still a solid fantasy play, however, as he had 5+ assists in every game in Round 2 and even grabbed 5+ rebounds in 6 of 7. Even so, his ceiling was 38 fantasy points vs. Philadelphia. Lowry averaged just over 6ppg in three contests vs. Milwaukee in the regular season though.
Value Plays
George Hill (DK: $4,100, FD; $5,000 Y!:$10 )
One of the value plays to look at in every game of this series is Milwaukee's George Hill. Mike Budenholzer has turned to the veteran quite frequently in these playoffs and Hill has responded with 24+ fantasy points in three straight games. The Bucks will need solid ball handling vs. the clamping Toronto defense and Hill can handle the pressure with 111 playoff games under his belt.
Serge Ibaka (DK:$4,400 FD:$5,100 Y!: $15)
There's definitely a price discrepancy between DK and FD on Serge Ibaka, so he's really only a value play on DraftKings. Ibaka has 121 playoff games to his credit, so he could be a reliable option in this series for Nick Nurse. Ibaka had a couple upside games in Round 2 as well, scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in Game 7 and going for 29 fantasy points in 32 minutes in Game 4. Ibaka also had a 30 and a 25 point scoring night vs. Milwaukee in the regular season - before Toronto acquired Marc Gasol however.
Malcolm Brogdon (DK: $5,200 FD: $5,100 Y! $14)
We still don't know what to expect from the Bucks' Malcolm Brogdon, as he's only been back one game from a heel injury. There will be low usage on Brogdon as his role is still being defined, but he was a key cog in Milwaukee's offense when healthy (15.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg). Milwaukee won by 25 in Game 5 vs. Boston, but Brogdon still had 10 points in 16 minutes of court time. The big question is if his usage increases - or decreases - in a close game.
Milwaukee is the much deeper team in this one, as Toronto really doesn't have many scoring options in Danny Green, Fred VanVleet, or even Gasol. They are value plays, but the floor and ceiling are both pretty low.
