DFS Main Slate Rundown 📰

The dust from last night’s inaugural huge, chaotic NBA slate has settled and I hope some of you guys came out on top! Things dial back down with a small four-game slate on deck tonight. Despite its modest size, this small slate is loaded with superstars -- Luka, Jokic, Wemby, SGA, Tatum, Ant -- the list goes on! Should be a fun night of NBA so let’s get into it. Best of luck!

On a personal note, I’m heading out of town for a wedding in a few hours so I must keep today’s newsletter somewhat abbreviated!

Point Guards/Shooting Guards to Consider 🏀

PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, OKC | DK: $9.9k, FD: $11.3k | at DEN

With so many stars on the hardwood tonight, I do believe SGA will go overlooked, especially when Luka Doncic (DK: $11.1k, FD: $11.9k) isn’t THAT much more expensive. With Josh Giddey now in Chicago, I believe we’ll see a sizable jump in SGA’s peripherals this season -- specifically in the assist category. Also, while he’s not a guy who is going to chuck up a ton of threes, he was draining an eye-popping 63.6% of his 3PA in the preseason, so perhaps that’s an aspect of his game that he’s worked on in the offseason. Either way, the usage is going to be sky-high, his assist numbers should go up, and SGA is always a candidate to rack up multiple steals and blocks. If you’re spending up at guard, Doncic is clearly the more exciting, higher-ceiling play but SGA may surprise us with a ceiling performance of his own and pop up in the optimal lineup when it's all said and done.

PG/SG Kyrie Irving, DAL | DK: $7.5k, FD: $8.1k | vs. SAS

The pricing on Kyrie just seems a bit too soft in the Mavs’ first game of the season so we’re giving him a quick spotlight today. Even when sharing the court with a healthy Luka Doncic, Irving was typically priced as a high-$8k to mid-$9k player, so we’re seeing a fairly substantial discount for him on both sites. Factoring in the Mavs’ addition of Klay Thompson may be partially responsible for the lower price tags on Irving. Still, I don’t believe Klay will ding his upside much, if at all, this year -- if anything, it opens up the floor even more since defenses can’t hyperfocus only guarding Luka and Kyrie. Expect Irving to be a popular play tonight, largely due to the soft pricing, but he did average a strong 1.34 FPPM in three games against the Spurs a season ago so, if he plays 35-40 minutes, he’s probably hitting value.

SG/SF Julian Strawther, DEN | DK: $3.2k, FD: $3.9k | vs. OKC

There’s a high possibility that multiple superstars are going to land in the optimal lineup tonight so if we’re going to be able to jam two or three stud players into lineups, we obviously need some value. Strawther is a worthy target as it’s possible he’ll find his way to 20-24 minutes while splitting SG duties with presumed starter Christian Braun. Strawther saw extensive run in the preseason (led DEN w/ 28.0 Min/gm), perhaps signifying an expanded role -- that isn’t dependent on injuries -- with the Nuggets this season. In his five preseason games, he poured in 18.8 PPG while shooting a red-hot 50% from three-point range.

Other Guards to Consider

PG Luka Doncic, DAL vs. SAS

SG Anthony Edwards, MIN at SAC

PG/SG Derrick White, BOS at WAS

PG Jrue Holiday, BOS at WAS

PG Chris Paul, SAS at DAL

PG/SG Donte DiVincenzo, MIN at SAC

SG/SF Malik Monk, SAC vs. MIN

PG/SG Russell Westbrook, DEN vs. OKC

SG/SF Alex Caruso, OKC at DEN

PG/SG Payton Pritchard, BOS at WAS

PG/SG Stephon Castle, SAS at DAL

PG/SG Carlton “Bub” Carrington, WAS vs. BOS

Small Forwards/Power Forwards to Consider 🏀

SF/PF Jayson Tatum, BOS | DK: $9.3k, FD: $10.1k | at WAS

The Celtics put on a three-point clinic on opening night and Tatum was the catalyst that ultimately sparked the huge blowout over the Knicks as he knocked down 8/11 3PA and ended with 37 points, 10 assists, four rebounds, and a steal/block apiece in just 30 minutes (he didn’t play at all in the 4th quarter). There is some major blowout potential in this game tonight, with Boston being 14-point favorites on the road in Washington. We know that Tatum is capable of hitting value even in a blowout, but if the Wizards manage to keep this game close, he could smash. As a reminder, the Wizards led the NBA in pace last season while also ranking 28th in DEFRTG. They would routinely provide outstanding DFS environments, particularly when they were able to avoid a total blowout. Tatum is still too cheap on DK at $9,300 -- his $10.1k FD price tag is more on par with where he should be, but certainly still firmly in play there as well.

PF/C Julius Randle, MIN | DK: $7.8k, FD: $7.3k | at SAC

With “stars and scrubs” being the go-to lineup build for most folks tonight, many of the mid-range plays are going to go largely low-owned. Randle has some risk attached to him but, after being criticized for being “lazy” and somewhat oblivious in his Timberwolves debut, perhaps he’s motivated to turn it up a notch tonight. Randle posted just a 21.5% USG% on Tuesday against the Lakers while guys like Jaden McDaniels (26.7% USG%) and Mike Conley (23.8% USG%) likely exceeded what their usage rates will typically be. Anthony Edwards (32.0% USG% on Tuesday) is going to be the top option, as usual, but Randle really needs to take on the No. 2 scoring option role for this offense to have success.

SF Julian Champagnie, SAS | DK: $3.8k, FD: $3.9k | at DAL

Here’s another value option if you’re going the “stars and scrubs” route. Champagnie is under $4k on both sites and he should be in line for the start this evening. After starting just three games across his first two NBA seasons, Champagnie was in the Spurs’ starting lineup for 59 games a season ago. He would often disappear in some of those games while failing to crack 20 minutes played, but we don’t need much out of him to return value tonight. Champagnie will serve primarily as a perimeter shooter. In five preseason games, Champagnie led the team in 3PA/gm (7.6) and he drained 42.1% of those shots. If given the minutes (30+), he can come away with some quality peripheral stats as well, as we saw on multiple occasions down the stretch last season.

Other Forwards to Consider

SF/PF DeMar DeRozan, SAC vs. MIN

SF/PF Jalen Williams, OKC at DEN

PF Aaron Gordon, DEN vs. OKC

PF Jeremy Sochan, SAS at DAL

SF/PF Sam Hauser, BOS at WAS (Currently questionable)

SF Kyshawn George, WAS vs. BOS

Centers to Consider 🏀

C Nikola Jokic, DEN | DK: $11k, FD: $11.7k | vs. OKC

Not exactly a hot take but Jokic sets up as my favorite stud play of the night. Jokic tends to do his best work at home where he has a built-in advantage against opposing bigs as he’s more acclimated to the mile-high Denver elevation. OKC will have a scrappy defense this season but they should be most vulnerable in the paint. Good shot at an opening-night triple-double for the reigning three-time NBA MVP.

C/PF Ousmane Dieng, OKC | DK: $3.1k, FD: $3.5k | at DEN

Punting at center isn’t a highly advisable strategy on this slate but if you are looking to be contrarian, Ousmane Dieng could operate as the backup center to Chet Holmgren out of necessity tonight. The Thunder will start the season without the services of Isaiah Hartenstein (hand), Jaylin Williams (hamstring), and Kenrich Williams (knee). So, they’re really limited on the big bodies and Dieng could see some backup minutes behind Jalen Williams as well. Dieng received extensive preseason run, logging a team-leading 26.0 Min/gm and he was a solid contributor in that time, averaging 11.0 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 3.6 APG, and 1.4 STL+BLK/gm. I could see Dieng receiving around 20 minutes tonight, which would be plenty of time for him to return value on these bottom-of-the-barrel price points.

Other Centers to Consider

C Victor Wembanyama, SAS at DAL

C/PF Domantas Sabonis, SAC vs. MIN

C/PF Chet Holmgren, OKC at DEN

C Rudy Gobert, MIN at SAC

C/PF Al Horford, BOS at WAS

C Derrick Lively II, DAL vs. SAS

C Luke Kornet, BOS at WAS
