DFS Main Slate Rundown 📰

Depending on your preferred DFS site of choice, you’ll be looking at either a six-game or eight-game main slate. FanDuel has chosen to leave the two latest tip-offs (OKC @ SAS, ATL @ GSW) off of their main slate while DraftKings will feature all eight NBA games that are on the schedule this evening. For the purposes of this newsletter, we’ll keep our primary focus on the six mutually shared games but some favorable options in those two late games will be listed below the spotlighted plays in each section. Point Guards/Shooting Guards to Consider 🏀

PG LaMelo Ball, CHA | DK: $9.6k, FD: $9.8k | @ DET

Another notable trade occurred yesterday which sent Terry Rozier to Miami in exchange for Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round pick. A bad Hornets team becomes even worse but it should lead to ridiculously high usage for LaMelo Ball, especially while starters like Gordon Hayward and Mark Williams remain out. The newly acquired Kyle Lowry is also not expected to play for the Hornets before the Feb. 8th trade deadline as they look to flip him for another asset. In 210 minutes with Rozier, Hayward, and Williams off the court this season, Ball has seen his usage rate increase by a team-high +6.3%. Ball has also been highly consistent and, if we exclude the Nov. 16th game where he suffered his ankle injury and played just 15 minutes, he has scored at least 46.5 DKFP/45 FDFP in his last 14 games. The Hornets will likely be involved in plenty of blowout losing game scripts, but this game between two awful teams is expected to be competitive (CHA: +3). Both of these teams also rank as the bottom two teams in the NBA in defensive rating, so scoring should not be overly difficult in this one.

PG Fred VanVleet, HOU | DK: $7.4k, FD: $8.4k | vs. POR

VanVleet has been one of the more volatile players in NBA DFS but he’ll land in a promising spot today. The Trailblazers have ranked 28th versus starting PGs L20Games and they head in on the second leg of a back-to-back. FVV routinely plays 40+ minutes and averages over an FPPM, so he brings daily 50+ FP upside to lineups, although the floor can obviously be quite low. But, again, we’ll like the match-up for him today and he’s particularly enticing on DraftKings at $7,400, which is one of his lowest DK price tags all season.

SG Luke Kennard, MEM | DK: $5.5k, FD: $5.7k | @ MIA

We’ll need to monitor Kennard’s status as he is currently questionable to play tonight due to “right thigh soreness.” Assuming he suits up, he’ll be an intriguing value option for the extremely shorthanded Grizzlies. Kennard has averaged 32.2 Min/gm L5Games and, while he’s more of a natural shooting guard (MIA: 28th vs. Starting SGs L20Games), he’s been forced to run the point at times. He has picked up at least five assists in three of his last four games and most recently put up a season-high 34.25 DKFP/30.1 FDFP against the Raptors on Monday. It’s far from an exciting play, but Kennard brings some moderate 6x upside to DFS lineups tonight. If Kennard is unable to play, then guys like John Konchar, Vince Williams Jr., and Ziaire Williams could pick up additional usage/minutes.

Small Forwards/Power Forwards to Consider 🏀

PF Kevin Durant, PHX | DK: $9.3k, FD: $10k | @ DAL

KD sets up as an intriguing contrarian play today as he should check in with single-digit ownership despite posting a pair of monster performances in his last two games. Ever since the Suns got their “big three” (KD, Booker, Beal) healthy and on the court together consistently, there have been plenty of games where they somewhat cannibalize one another’s upside. But, as we’ve seen the last couple of games, Durant will not hesitate to take over a game. He combined for 83 points on 57 shots (59.6% FG%, 45.5% 3P%) with 15 rebounds, 10 assists, five blocks, and a steal in those two previous games. Tonight’s match-up in Dallas could end up being the best DFS environment on the slate. This game features a high 240 over/under along with the closest spread of the day (PHX: -2.5). Furthermore, the Mavs have ranked 25th versus starting PFs L20Games and if Durant keeps the hot hand, there would be little Dallas could do to slow him down.

SG/SF Brandon Miller, CHA | DK: $6.1k, FD: $6.7k | @ DET

Rookie Brandon Miller has hit a nice stride recently, scoring at least 37.25 DKFP/36.6 FDFP in three consecutive games while shooting 61.4% from the field in that span. As mentioned in LaMelo Ball’s spotlight, there will be plenty of usage to go around in this Hornets offense due to both injuries and the departure of Terry Rozier. With Rozier, Hayward, and M. Williams off the court this season, Miller’s +4.7% usage increase ranks second on the team, behind only LaMelo Ball. Miller should rank no lower than third on the team in terms of usage rate and he could continue to flourish against a Pistons team that ranks 29th in DEFRTG.

SF/PF Georges Niang, CLE | DK: $4k, FD: $4.7k | @ MIL

Niang is getting some quality run off of the Cavs’ bench while PF/C Evan Mobley remains sidelined. Over his last five games, he’s averaging a sturdy 1.13 FPPM and his best game of the season came against this same Bucks team one week ago. In that game, Niang poured in 33 points, five rebounds, and two assists -- good for 44.25 DKFP/41.0 FDFP. That game did end up being a massive blowout in favor of the Cavs, which is unlikely to repeat itself (MIL: -7 in tonight’s game). However, Niang could still find his way into 24-28 minutes and if he continues to score over an FPPM, he’s a strong bet to return value tonight, especially at a flat $4,000 on DraftKings.

Centers to Consider 🏀

C Alperen Sengun, HOU | DK: $8.3k, FD: $9.4k | vs. POR

Sengun continues to provide one of the better floor/ceiling combinations at the center position. In his previous five starts, he’s up to 1.52 FPPM while averaging 52.4 DKFP/51.0 FDFP and he’s contributing nicely in all five stat categories. The Trailblazers are always a good team to target with opposing centers as they allow the 4th most points in the paint per game and rank 23rd in rebounding%. Sengun is certainly in play at his $9,400 FanDuel price tag but he remains underpriced at $8,300 on DraftKings.

C Jarrett Allen, CLE | DK: $7.7k, FD: $8.5k | @ MIL

There are not many stand-out value centers to speak of today so we’ll stick to the mid-range with our second spotlighted center. Allen has been a great floor play, scoring no fewer than 37.0 DKFP/35.9 FDFP in his last 12 games, and he has exploded for multiple 55+ FP games in that stretch as well. Allen has gone up against this Bucks team twice this season and has averaged 52.1 DKFP/51.3 FDFP in those games. The Bucks have taken a major step back defensively this season, ranking 21st in DEFRTG, and they’re dealing with some coaching turnover after firing HC Adrian Griffin yesterday. This could be a chance for the Cavs to jump on a potentially distracted Milwaukee team but, one way or another, we should expect another strong night from Jarrett Allen.
