DFS Main Slate Rundown 📰

It’s the final day before the NBA All-Star Break arrives, and it’s a thin schedule with just three games on the board. Normally, I don’t put a newsletter together for slates with fewer than four games, but this is our last taste of [normal] NBA action for a week, so this will be an exception. The first game of the evening doesn’t tip off until 8:30 ET so we’ll have more time than usual to get our lineups together for the evening. Pending further news, injury impacts are few and far between on tonight’s mini-slate. There are just three key “questionable” players to monitor -- Anthony Edwards, Scoot Henderson, and Luke Kennard. Finding some worthy value plays is often the toughest part of these small slates, so every sliver of news that comes out could end up changing the entire trajectory of the slate. As it stands now, it looks like the Grizzlies will be the source of most of the value… once again. Let’s see what we can figure out today! Best of luck! Enjoy the All-Star Break festivities, and I’ll catch up with you guys when the NBA returns next Thursday!

Update: Giannis Antetokounmpo was downgraded from “probable” to “questionable” this afternoon, so that will clearly be a major injury status to monitor.

Main Slate Match-Ups w/ Game Totals & Point Spreads

Note: NBA position designations are never going to perfectly align between the major DFS sites. For the purposes of these newsletters, positional designations will default to DraftKings.

Point Guards/Shooting Guards to Consider 🏀

PG Steph Curry, GSW | DK: $9.6k, FD: $9.4k | @ UTA

Curry is the most expensive guard on the evening but he should be viewed as a priority as he heads into the All-Star Break in vintage form. He secured yet another NBA record last night against the Clippers where he recorded 7+ three-pointers for the fourth consecutive game. Spanning his last 10 games, Curry is averaging 1.54 FPPM and he has posted at least 54.0 DKFP/48.4 FDFP in seven of those games. This match-up is easily the most enticing DFS environment of the evening given its slate-high total (240 over/under) and narrow spread (GSW: -2). The Jazz have ranked 27th versus starting PGs L20Games. These two teams met just three days ago and Curry supplied a 25/6/10 stat line with four combined steals/blocks in 32 minutes -- good for 60.0 DKFP/58.2 FDFP. Given his current form, Curry’s sub-$10k salaries make him one of the better plays of the evening and he’ll be a tough guy to fade.

PG Keyonte George, UTA | DK: $4.7k, FD: $5.4k | vs. GSW

The Jazz rotation is a constantly unpredictable mystery but Keyonte George has been reinserted into the starting rotation for the previous two games and is currently expected to maintain that role for the foreseeable future. His start against this same Warriors team three days ago resulted in a dud, but he bounced back yesterday with a solid all-around 13/5/7 stat line with two steals across 33 minutes, which resulted in 34.25 DKFP/33.5 FDFP. George has averaged a decent, albeit unremarkable, 0.91 FPPM on the season. But if he is going to log around 32 minutes with the starters, it’s quite easy to see how he can return value on his low-end DFS salaries.

PG/SG Jordan Goodwin, MEM | DK: $4.4k, FD: $4.2k | vs. MIL

It’s setting up as another day where the Grizzlies will be struggling to field a healthy NBA team. Excluding the guys who are already out long term, Memphis will be without Scottie Pippen Jr. and Derrick Rose, they’ll likely be without Jaren Jackson Jr. and John Konchar (both listed as doubtful tonight), and they may not have Luke Kennard (knee/questionable). That leaves plenty of usage and minutes to go around, particularly in the backcourt. At the time of this writing, I’m not seeing any recent updates on PG Jacob Gilyard (DK: $4.2k, FD: $4.5k), who has received a few starts in recent weeks, but he has been down with the G-League the last several days. If Gilyard is rejoining the Grizzlies ahead of tonight’s game, there’s a strong chance he starts and would set up as a quality value play. For the time being, Jordan Goodwin is the latest member of the Grizzlies’ roster carousel, and he logged 24 minutes off of the bench in last night’s game and secured a respectable 22.75 DKFP/24.1 FDFP. Goodwin has averaged nearly an FPPM this season so if he lands a spot start tonight, he’ll set up as a go-to value play. Ultimately, we’ll have to take a wait-and-see approach to see who exactly will be available for Memphis this evening. Fortunately, this will be the first game of the night so we’ll know all of the important news and the starting lineup before contests lock.

Other Guards to Consider

PG Damian Lillard, MIL | DK: $8.9k, FD: $8.5k | @ MEM (Preferred if Giannis is out)

SG/SF Anthony Edwards, MIN | DK: $8.7k, FD: $9.3k | @ POR (Currently questionable)

PG/SG Anfernee Simons, POR | DK: $7.8k, FD: $7.8k | vs. MIN (Slight boost if S. Henderson is out)

SG Collin Sexton, UTA | DK: $6.4k, FD: $6.8k | vs. GSW

PG/SG Brandin Podziemski, GSW | DK: $6.1k, FD: $5.9k | @ UTA

PG Mike Conley, MIN | DK: $5.2k, FD: $6k | @ POR (Boost if A. Edwards is out)

PG Jacob Gilyard, MEM | DK: $4.2k, FD: $4.5k | vs. MIL (Only if he rejoins the team & preferred if starting)

SG/SF Nickeil Alexander-Walker, MIN | DK: $3.8k, FD: $4.8k | @ POR (Preferred if A. Edwards is out)

PG/SG Dalano Banton, POR | DK: $3.7k, FD: $4.3k | vs. MIN (Only if S. Henderson is out)

Small Forwards/Power Forwards to Consider 🏀

SF/PF Lauri Markkanen, UTA | DK: $8.1k, FD: $8.4k | vs. GSW

The results have been extremely up and down, and more down than up, for Markkanen lately. But he plays the most consistently strong minutes of any member of the Jazz and always brings a 50+ FP ceiling to the table if his three-pointer is falling and a few extra rebounds head in his direction. We saw one of those big Markkanen games last Tuesday when he recorded a 33-point, 11-rebound double-double, and it wasn’t too long ago (early-to-mid January) when he was putting up near, or over, 50 FP on a nightly basis. As mentioned, this game also has the best chance to turn into a close, high-scoring shootout and Markkanen’s lackluster performances in recent days could keep his ownership mostly in check, even on a three-game slate.

SF/PF Andrew Wiggins, GSW | DK: $5.1k, FD: $5.3k | @ UTA

It’s been an erratic season for Wiggins, who even spent an extended period playing off of the Warriors’ bench, but he’s been in a decent groove lately and has averaged 1.09 FPPM over his last five games. His current $5.1k/$5.3k DFS salaries will make him an appealing option tonight against the Jazz, who have ranked dead last in DEFRTG over their last 20 games. Wiggins’ minutes have been on the lower side recently, but he did log 30 minutes in last night’s close contest with the Clippers. If he pushes for 30 minutes again tonight, he’s a candidate to return 6x value to go along with an 8x (or better) ceiling.

PF/C Lamar Stevens, MEM | DK: $3.4k, FD: $4.2k | vs. MIL

We’ll go Grizzlies dumpster diving again when searching for a value forward play. Lamar Stevens has played 46 minutes off of the Memphis bench across the last two games. In that span, Stevens has averaged 1.13 FPPM and has come close to a pair of double-doubles while racking up two blocks in each game. With Jaren Jackson Jr. listed as doubtful tonight, I would guess that Gregory “GG” Jackson (DK: $4.9k, FD: $6.1k) will slide into the starting lineup at power forward while Stevens continues to play 20+ minutes with the reserves. Given his per-minute production, that would be plenty of time for Stevens to provide a quality fantasy score.

Other Forwards to Consider

PF/C Giannis Antetokounmpo, MIL | DK: $11.8k, FD: $11.7k | @ MEM (Currently questionable)

PF/C Karl-Anthony Towns, MIN | DK: $7.7k, FD: $8.1k | @ POR (Preferred if A. Edwards is out)

PF Jonathan Kuminga, GSW | DK: $6.7k, FD: $7.3k | @ UTA

PF/C John Collins, UTA | DK: $6.6k, FD: $6.4k | vs. GSW

SF/SG Vince Williams Jr., MEM | DK: $6.5k, FD: $7k | vs. MIL

PF/C Draymond Green, GSW | DK: $6.3k, FD: $6.5k | @ UTA

PF/C Bobby Portis, MIL | DK: $6.2k, FD: $6.7k | @ MEM (Preferred if Giannis is out)

PF Gregory “GG” Jackson, MEM | DK: $4.9k, FD: $6.1k | vs. MIL (Preferred if starting)

SF Jaden McDaniels, MIN | DK: $3.6k, FD: $4.4k | @ POR (Boost if A. Edwards is out)

SF/PF Kyle Anderson, MIN | DK: $3.5k, FD: $5.2k | @ POR (DK Preferred)

Centers to Consider 🏀

C Rudy Gobert, MIN | DK: $7.5k, FD: $8k | @ POR

To state the obvious, center is a thin position on this three-game slate but we can almost always feel good about Gobert’s fantasy floor thanks to his perpetual double-double plus shot-blocking upside. Across his last 20 starts, Gobert has posted 15.8 PPG, 13.6 RPG, and 2.5 STL+BLK/gm, resulting in a 40.1 DKFP/40.0 FDFP average. Portland gives up the 4th most points in the paint per game, they’re 23rd in rebounding%, and they’re allowing the most blocks per game in the NBA (7.5 opp BLK/gm). Gobert’s usage won’t see any significant increase if Anthony Edwards (knee/questionable) is out tonight, but it would increase the likelihood of this game staying close for four quarters. This is a quick turnaround re-match from Tuesday where the Timberwolves won 121-109 and Gobert ended up playing 37 minutes even in a fairly comfortable win. So, as long as the Timberwolves don’t jump out to an enormous early lead, Gobert should be in line for another ~40 FP night with a chance at a 50 burger.

C Walker Kessler, UTA | DK: $5.6k, FD: $7.1k | vs. GSW

This will be a “DraftKings preferred” play since Kessler is still modestly priced at $5,600 despite taking over as a starter over the last three games. But, since blocks and steals are awarded three fantasy points on FanDuel, Kessler is certainly playable on FanDuel. Kessler is averaging 1.17 FPPM and 5.0 STL+BLK/gm as a starter this season and, in the showdown with the Warriors three days ago, he provided an 11/9/1 stat line with SIX combined blocks and steals -- good for 34.75 DKFP/39.3 FDFP. As long as he maintains his starting role, Kessler sets up as a quality option once again tonight.

Other Centers to Consider

C Deandre Ayton, POR | DK: $7.3k, FD: $7.9k | vs. MIN

C Brook Lopez, MIL | DK: $5.7k, FD: $6.6k | @ MEM (DK Preferred)
