DFS Main Slate Rundown 📰

The first full week of NBA action has begun, and we’ll get the ball rolling with a hefty 11-game Monday slate! At this point, we’ve seen a two or three-game sample size out of every team, so we’re beginning to get a general idea of individual roles, minutes allocations, and usage distribution. It’s not a tremendous amount of data, but it’s a start! Let’s get the week started on a high note and find some winning plays, shall we? Best of luck!

Main Slate Match-Ups w/ Game Totals & Point Spreads

Top DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Plays

Note: NBA position designations are never going to perfectly align between the major DFS sites. For the purposes of these newsletters, positional designations will default to DraftKings.

Point Guards/Shooting Guards to Consider 🏀

PG Luka Doncic, DAL | DK: $12k, FD: $12.4k | @ MEM

Luka has cracked into the $12k range on both sites but he’s a can’t-miss player to spotlight when it comes to stud plays on today’s huge slate. Doncic put up a triple-double in his season debut, netting 72.25 DKFP/65.6 FDFP, and he followed that up with a patented “Luka Magic” 49-point performance in which he secured 78 DKFP/71.5 FDFP. We still need to see more games out of every team to see where their baseline pace of play settles in but, for now, the Mavs are 5th in the NBA in pace while the Grizzlies rank 9th, so we can expect a high total of possessions and shot attempts in this game. Doncic is hoisting 12.5 3PA/gm thus far and always brings immense peripheral stat upside to the table. If you can find some viable value plays on today’s slate, you can’t really go wrong gaining exposure to Doncic’s towering floor/ceiling combination.

Update: Kyrie Irving (foot) was a late addition to the injury report and is now questionable. Doncic becomes perhaps an even stronger play should Irving sit out.

PG/SG Cam Thomas, BKN | DK: $6k, FD: $7.8k | @ CHA

The Nets will continue to be without a couple of their opening-night starters with Nic Claxton and Cameron Johnson both ruled out for a second consecutive game. Those absences allowed Cam Thomas to enter the starting lineup last Friday, and he’s making a strong case to retain his starting role moving forward. Thomas has scored 30+ points in both games this season while leading the Nets with a 35.2% USG%. The shooting will surely regress but he’s currently sinking 62.5% of his shot attempts, including 71.0% of his 2PA, and he’s gone for 45.25 DKFP/46.25 DKFP and 44.6 FDFP/47.4 FDFP through two games. As has been the case for the last couple of seasons, the Hornets will be a team we’ll want to target with opposing players thanks to their fast pace of play. The Nets currently rank 17th in pace but get a notable upgrade against the Hornets, who are currently 2nd in the NBA in pace. FanDuel has priced Thomas about where he should be at $7,800 (still playable at that price) but, given his current role, he’s an underpriced target at an even $6,000 on DraftKings.

PG/SG Derrick Rose, MEM | DK: $3.5k, FD: $4.4k | vs. DAL

If you’re gunning for some studs on this slate we’ll need to find some value to make those builds possible. D-Rose may not be an everyday starter at this point in his career, but he is a valuable player off of the bench for a short-handed Grizzlies team that should be running a tight eight or nine-man rotation tonight. Rose is still efficient with the minutes he does receive and he’s averaging 1.11 FPPM in 18.5 Min/Gm through three games this season. The hope for tonight is for him to play low-20s minutes, as he did against the Nuggets last Friday where he scored 27.0 DKFP/25.3 FDFP across 22 minutes while putting up 14 shot attempts with the Memphis second unit. As mentioned in Luka’s spotlight, both of these teams are top-10 in pace of play through the first week of the season, so Rose could stuff the stat sheet in his time on the court tonight.

Other Guards to Consider

PG Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, OKC | DK: $10.6k, FD: $11.8k | vs. DET

PG/SG Steph Curry, GSW | DK: $9.9k, FD: $9.9k | @ NOP (Bump if K. Thompson is out)

PG LaMelo Ball, CHA | DK: $9.7k, FD: $9.4k | vs. BKN

SG/SF Anthony Edwards, MIN | DK: $9.2k, FD: $9.2k | @ ATL

PG/SG Jrue Holiday, BOS | DK: $6.8k, FD: $6.5k | @ WAS

SG/SF Shaedon Sharpe, POR | DK: $6.3k, FD: $7.1k | @ TOR

PG/SG Spencer Dinwiddie, BKN | DK: $6.1k, FD: $6k | @ CHA

PG/SG Malcolm Brogdon, POR | DK: $5.6k, FD: $5.8k | @ TOR

PG/SG Cole Anthony, ORL | DK: $5.3k, FD: $5.7k | @ LAL

SG/SF Alec Burks, DET | DK: $4.5k, FD: $4.6k | @ OKC

PG Dru Smith, MIA | DK: $3.2k, FD: $3.8k | @ MIL (Preferred if J. Richardson remains out)

Small Forwards/Power Forwards to Consider 🏀

SF/PG Scottie Barnes, TOR | DK: $7.7k, FD: $8.5k | vs. POR

Scottie Barnes’ third NBA season is off to a productive start, and he’s piling on the stats across the board, averaging 21.0 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 6.7 APG, and 3.7 STL+BLK/gm while playing at least 37 minutes in all three contests. All of those figures have worked out to an efficient 1.32 FPPM and at least 46.0 DKFP/46.1 FDFP scored in each game. The Raptors will host the rebuilding Trailblazers who have a bunch of young talent, but rate out poorly defensively. Portland currently ranks 28th in defensive rating while allowing 117.0 PPG (9th most). The Raptors also look to be without Precious Achiuwa (groin/doubtful) tonight and may not have OG Anunoby (leg/questionable) available either. Barnes sets up as a strong play regardless, but if both of those players are out, his floor/ceiling combination receives a moderate boost.

PF Jalen Johnson, ATL | DK: $5k, FD: $6k | vs. MIN

Johnson performed well enough across the initial two games of the season that the Hawks felt confident enough to bump him into the starting rotation in their game against the Bucks yesterday. His 26 minutes as a starter were a season-low, but the game was a fairly comfortable blowout, and there was no need to push the starters too much while being on the front end of a back-to-back. If Johnson begins to play low-to-mid 30s minutes, his salaries surely won’t stay this low for long. He is checking off the boxes across the board, averaging 15.3 PPG on 64.5% FG% while adding 7.7 RPG, 1.7 APG, and 2.7 STL+BLK/gm. Those figures average him out to a strong 1.15 FPPM. This looks to be one of the better game environments on the slate given its 229 over/under (3rd highest) and close spread (ATL +2).

SF Royce O’Neale, BKN | DK: $4.3k, FD: $4.1k | @ CHA

The injuries to Nic Claxton and Cameron Johnson (both out again tonight) opened up some additional minutes for O’Neale in the Nets last game. He ended up playing 34 minutes off of the bench, in a game that wasn’t a blowout and secured an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double while adding three dimes and a steal -- good for 31.5 DKFP/27.5 FDFP. O’Neale is never going to take over any significant scoring role, but if he’s putting up around 10 shots/gm, he’s going to be a great bet to hit value thanks to the useful peripheral stats that he can rack up. Pending further injury news, O’Neale is one of the better forward values on the board today.

Other Forwards to Consider

SF/PF Jayson Tatum, BOS | DK: $10.5k, FD: $10.7k | @ WAS

SF/PF LeBron James, LAL | DK: $9.1k, FD: $10k | vs. ORL (DK Preferred -- But beware of him being a late scratch or limited after playing 39 minutes last night)

SF/SG Brandon Ingram, NOP | DK: $8k, FD: $7.9k | vs. GSW

SF/PF DeMar DeRozan, CHI | DK: $7.5k, FD: $8k | @ IND (Bump if Z. LaVine is out)

SF/PF Ben Simmons, BKN | DK: $6.4k, FD: $6.7k | @ CHA

PF Jalen Williams, OKC | DK: $5.8k, FD: $5.6k | vs. DET

PF/C John Collins, UTA | DK: $5.6k, FD: $6.2k | @ DEN

SF/PF Ausar Thompson, DET | DK: $5.5k, FD: $6k | @ OKC

PF/C Isaiah Stewart, DET | DK: $5.2k, FD: $5.9k | @ OKC

PF Dorian Finney-Smith, BKN | DK: $4.1k, FD: $4.6k | @ CHA (Presuming he starts again)

Centers to Consider 🏀

C Jalen Duren, DET | DK: $7.1k, FD: $8k | @ OKC

Duren’s cheaper price tags were fun while they lasted but both DFS sites have quickly hiked up his salaries to match his outstanding early-season production. This is a gentle reminder that we are still working with very small sample sizes but, through three games, Duren is the NBA’s leading rebounder (15.3 RPG), he’s making 80% of his shot attempts, he has recorded multiple blocks in each game this season (2.7 BLK/gm), and he’s even contributing nicely (by big man standards) in the assist department (4.0 APG). Overall, he’s averaging an elite 1.51 FPPM while playing 33.2 Min/gm and he has scored at least 44.75 DKFP/42.9 FDFP in each game. This could be a spot where Duren continues a potential breakout sophomore season. The Thunder rank 23rd in rebounding rate (48.2%) and have allowed the 4th most points in the paint per game (54.7).

C Onyeka Okongwu, ATL | DK: $3.8k, FD: $4.8k | vs. MIN

Okongwu projects well tonight, particularly on DraftKings at his sub-$4k price tag. Pending a surprise, he’ll continue to play off of the bench but he is a candidate to pick up a few additional minutes to help the Hawks match the Timberwolves’ sizable starting frontcourt that features 7’1” Rudy Gobert and 6’11” Karl-Anthony Towns. Okongwu averaged 33.5 DKFP in two games against the T-Wolves last season and he notched a season-high 23 minutes and 27.25 DKFP in yesterday’s game versus the Bucks, though, the blowout may have factored into the slight minutes boost. Either way, Okongwu shouldn’t flop at this $3,800 DraftKings price so he’s a nice piece to “stars and scrubs” lineup builds (and he remains playable on FanDuel).

Other Centers to Consider

C Nikola Jokic, DEN | DK: $11.8k, FD: $12.1k | vs. UTA

C Anthony Davis, LAL | DK: $9.6k, FD: $10.8k | vs. ORL (Possible late-swap candidate if it is announced L. James will be out or limited)

PF/C Karl-Anthony Towns, MIN | DK: $8.4k, FD: $8.9k | @ ATL

PF/C Kristaps Porzingis, BOS | DK: $8.3k, FD: $8.8k | @ WAS

C Nikola Vucevic, CHI | DK: $7.2k, FD: $7.4k | @ IND

C Mark Williams, CHA | DK: $6.1k, FD: $6.8k | vs. BKN

C Clint Capela, ATL | DK: $5.8k, FD: $6.3k | vs. MIN

PF/C Naz Reid, MIN | DK: $5k, FD: $5.5k | @ ATL

PF/C Kevin Love, MIA | DK: $4.4k, FD: $5k | @ MIL

C Andre Drummond, CHI | DK: $3.9k, FD: $4.4k | @ IND
