DFS Main Slate Rundown 📰

The inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament is in the books! The “normal” regular season scheduling will resume with a vengeance today as a mammoth 13-game slate lands on the docket. As you’ll see below, there are a myriad of injury impacts to monitor and plenty of key players have already been ruled out. The guys who are healthy should be well-rested due to the additional off days that the IST has provided. Aside from the Pacers, every other team on this slate has not played in at least three days, going back to Friday. This will be a wild one so strap in and best of luck!

Main Slate Match-Ups w/ Game Totals & Point Spreads

Top DraftKings & FanDuel DFS Plays

Note: NBA position designations are never going to perfectly align between the major DFS sites. For the purposes of these newsletters, positional designations will default to DraftKings.

Point Guards/Shooting Guards to Consider 🏀

PG Luka Doncic, DAL | DK: $11.8k, FD: $12.2k | @ MEM

It’s not a groundbreaking play but, even on a 13-game slate, Luka is going to be difficult to ignore. Kyrie Irving (heel) is ruled out for tonight’s game along with rotational players Grant Williams (knee) and Josh Green (elbow). So, the rest of the Mavs team will hop in the Doncic backpack and hope to be carried to a victory tonight. Unfortunately, Doncic has been notably less effective in road games where he’s averaging -17.5% fewer FPPG this season. But the match-up will alleviate some of those concerns. The Grizzlies have ranked 25th against opposing PGs (L20Games). Doncic also torched the Grizzlies when he last played them on October 30th (also on the road). Kyrie Irving also sat out that game and Doncic ended up with a 35/12/12 triple-double across 40 minutes, which was good enough to earn 76.5 DKFP/67.4 FDFP. Pending an unforeseen injury or a very early blowout, Doncic is going to bring one of the highest floor/ceiling combinations to DFS lineups tonight… but he will also bring along some hefty ownership.

PG/SG Cade Cunningham, DET | DK: $8.2k, FD: $7.9k | vs. IND

As is often the case when the Pacers land on the schedule, this match-up will feature the highest total on the slate with a hefty 247 over/under. Indiana continues to operate at the NBA’s fastest pace but Detroit is also a very uptempo offense in their own right, ranking 7th in pace this season. So, there will be plenty of possessions to go around in this one and it makes plenty of sense to gain exposure to a high-usage player like Cade Cunningham. He has averaged a rock-solid 1.14 FPPM on the season and Cunningham has upped that to 1.28 FPPM over his last five starts. He has also been a bit more reliable at home where he is averaging +9.9% more FPPG and he’ll receive a slight usage boost with Jalen Duren (ankle/out) and Marvin Bagley III (back/doubtful) out of the picture tonight. The 2-20 Pistons have not won a game since October 30th and they’ll be +7.5 home underdogs in this one. Cunningham could see a minutes reduction if Detroit gets blown out early tonight, but I do like their chances of at least hanging around on the scoreboard for most of this game. As mentioned in the intro, the Pacers are the only team on the slate that has played within the last two days and perhaps there could be a slight hangover from the In-Season Tournament Championship loss to the Lakers on Saturday.

SG/SF Tim Hardaway Jr., DAL | DK: $5.4k, FD: $5.4k | @ MEM

We’ll go back to the shorthanded Mavs and put THJ in the spotlight. I believe Dante Exum (DK: $5.7k, FD: $6k) will be a fairly popular value play tonight -- assuming he continues to start, I have no issues with that play. But Hardaway Jr. will also pique my interest and he comes at a bit of a discount when compared to Exum. With Grant Williams and Josh Green also out in the Mavs’ previous game on Friday, and Kyrie Irving exiting the game after just 13 minutes due to a heel contusion, Hardaway ended up playing a season-high 37 minutes. He didn’t post a remarkable performance with the additional minutes, just 26.5 DKFP/23.8 FDFP. However, if he’s going to play mid-30s minutes off the bench, Hardaway certainly brings some 6x-7x (or better) upside to the table at his $5,400 salary on both sites. He’s averaging 0.92 FPPM this season and the Grizzlies have been a bottom-10 defensive team against reserve units.

Other Guards to Consider

PG Tyrese Haliburton, IND | DK: $10.9k, FD: $11.7k | @ DET (DK Preferred)

PG Tyrese Maxey, PHI | DK: $9.2k, FD: $8.9k | vs. WAS (Boost if Embiid sits)

SG/SF Desmond Bane, MEM | DK: $8.7k, FD: $8.6k | vs. DAL

PG/SG Terry Rozier, CHA | DK: $8.3k, FD: $8.3k | vs. MIA

PG Fred VanVleet, TOR | DK: $8.3k, FD: $7.8k | vs. SAS

PG Coby White, CHI | DK: $7.3k, FD: $7.3k | @ MIL

PG/SG Cam Thomas, BKN | DK: $7.1k, FD: $6.5k | @ SAC

PG/SG De’Anthony Melton, PHI | DK: $6.3k, FD: $6.5k | vs. WAS (Boost if Embiid sits)

SG/SF Brandon Miller, CHA | DK: $6k, FD: $5.9k | vs. MIA

PG/SF Dante Exum, DAL | DK: $5.7k, FD: $6k | @ MEM

PG Killian Hayes, DET | DK: $5.5k, FD: $5.7k | vs. IND

PG TJ McConnell, IND | DK: $4.5k, FD: $5.8k | @ DET (DK Preferred)

SG/SF Donte Divincenzo, NYK | DK: $4.5k, FD: $4.5k | vs. TOR (If Brunson/Quickley are both out)

SG Seth Curry, DAL | DK: $4.1k, FD: $4.8k | @ MEM (Preferred if starting)

SG/SF Isaiah Joe, OKC | DK: $4k, FD: $4.7k | vs. UTA

Small Forwards/Power Forwards to Consider 🏀

SF/PF Kawhi Leonard, LAC | DK: $8.1k, FD: $8.8k | vs. POR

There are no clear-cut forwards to spend up on on this slate so I’m expecting ownership to be spread out quite a bit at these positions. Leonard makes as much sense as anyone at the position today. He’s a better bargain on DraftKings but, given his three 52+ FP results within his last six games, he remains in play on FanDuel at his sub-$9k price tag. Leonard has played no fewer than 35 minutes in the previous six games and he’s averaging 1.25 FPPM during that stretch. The Trailblazers have been a great team to target with opposing forwards and they’ve ranked 23rd versus PF starters over their last 20 games. The only worry I have with Leonard is the potential for a blowout (LAC: -13). Leonard usually plays heavy minutes in moderate blowouts, but the Clips are on the front end of a back-to-back with a much more capable Kings opponent coming to town tomorrow. But if Portland can keep this game close, Leonard has some more 50+ FP upside tonight.

SF/PF Jalen Williams, OKC | DK: $6.5k, FD: $6.9k | vs. UTA

Jalen Williams can be one of those players that is tough to “get right” but he is on a nice roll lately, having scored at least 39.75 DKFP/38.5 FDFP in three of his last four games. Williams and the Thunder are also at home tonight where he has shot the ball MUCH better this season -- 60.2% FG% in nine home games, 44.4% FG% in nine away games. The Thunder check in with the third-highest implied team total on the slate (123.8 points) and the Jazz are known to get torched by opposing forwards, and they’re still playing without their highest-graded defensive player, Lauri Markkanen (hamstring/out). Jazz rim protector Walker Kessler (foot/out) will also be sidelined tonight, which is more good news for Jalen Williams who takes 77.7% of his shots from two-point range.

PF/C Danilo Gallinari, WAS | DK: $4k, FD: $4k | @ PHI

This isn’t exactly a safe play but it’s a low-risk investment with Gallo priced at a flat $4k on both sites today. Gallinari is averaging a hair under an FPPM (0.97 FPPM) this season and the Wizards could use his size with center Daniel Gafford (hip) out for tonight’s game. There’s also potential for some extra run in the event of a blowout (PHI: -12). He’ll be a low floor play but there is moderate 6x potential to be had from Gallinari if he can log 20+ minutes this evening.

Other Forwards to Consider

PF/C Giannis Antetokounmpo, MIL | DK: $11.2k, FD: $11.9k | vs. CHI

PF/C Victor Wembanyama, SAS | DK: $8.8k, FD: $9.6k | @ HOU (DK Preferred)

PF/C Julius Randle, NYK | DK: $8.6k, FD: $8.6k | vs. TOR (Boost if Brunson or Quickley sit)

SF/PF DeMar DeRozan, CHI | DK: $8.2k, FD: $8.4k | @ MIL

SF/PF Michael Porter Jr., DEN | DK: $7k, FD: $6.9k | @ ATL

SF/PF Bojan Bogdanovic, DET | DK: $6.5k, FD: $6.2k | vs. IND

SF/SG Caleb Martin, MIA | DK: $6.4k, FD: $6.1k | @ CHA (Assuming he continues to start)

SF/PF RJ Barrett, NYK | DK: $5.8k, FD: $6k | vs. TOR (Boost if Brunson or Quickley sit)

SF/PF Derrick Jones Jr., DAL | DK: $5.3k, FD: $5.7k | @ MEM

PF/C Kevin Love, MIA | DK: $5.2k, FD: $5.5k | @ CHA

SF/PF Tari Eason, HOU | DK: $4.4k, FD: $4.7k | vs. SAS (Eason is currently questionable)

PF Torrey Craig, CHI | DK: $4.3k, FD: $5.1k | @ MIL (DK Preferred)

Centers to Consider 🏀

C Joel Embiid, PHI | DK: $11.7k, FD: $12.9k | vs. WAS

The center position is where much of this slate’s value can be found so a superstar spend-up play like Embiid may provide some quality leverage. Embiid (knee) does currently own a questionable designation, but he was part of the 76ers’ morning shootaround and has had three days of rest, so he’s probably suiting up tonight. It’s an absolute smash spot against a Wizards team that plays at the second-fastest pace, ranks dead last in defensive rating, allows the second-most points in the paint per game (60.1), and ranks last in rebounding percentage (43.9%). In two games against Washington this season, Embiid has exploded for 79.75 DKFP/76.1 FDFP (Dec. 6th) and 75.75 DKFP/75.2 FDFP (Nov. 6th). One of those games ended up being an 18-point blowout where Embiid was limited to 31 minutes but he still stuffed the stat sheet with a ridiculous 48-point performance. In a closer game against Washington last Wednesday, Embiid dropped 50 points on 19/29 shooting. This is a 7 o’clock ET tip-off so we should know Embiid’s status before lock.

C Nick Richards, CHA | DK: $4.6k, FD: $5.1k | vs. MIA

Richards will be one of those popular value centers on this slate with Mark Williams (back/doubtful) not expected to play. He is averaging 1.09 FPPM this season and should play 28-32 minutes tonight. Normally, Miami is not a team we’d want to target with opposing centers but the Heat will be without Bam Adebayo (hip) for a fourth consecutive game, which softens up the match-up significantly. Anything can happen in NBA DFS, but it’s difficult to imagine Richards failing in this spot with his modest DFS salaries.

Other Centers to Consider

C Nikola Jokic, DEN | DK: $11.9k, FD: $12.4k | @ ATL

C Alperen Sengun, HOU | DK: $8.9k, FD: $8.7k | vs. SAS

C Nikola Vucevic, CHI | DK: $8.1k, FD: $8.1k | @ MIL

C Myles Turner, IND | DK: $7.3k, FD: $7.6k | @ DET

C Ivica Zubac, LAC | DK: $5.9k, FD: $6.8k | vs. POR

C Orlando Robinson, MIA | DK: $5.6k, FD: $5.4k | @ CHA

C Isaiah Hartenstein, NYK | DK: $4.6k, FD: $4.9k | vs. TOR

PF/C Jericho Sims, NYK | DK: $3k, FD: $3.5k | vs. TOR (Min-priced GPP punt play)
