Top NBA Plays 1/15 | A Night to Go Bench Hunting?
Fans of last second buzzer beaters and clutch free throws with :02 on the clock might want to look away from Tuesday's NBA card. Of the six games on the docket, only one (GS @ DEN) has a spread less than 6. DFS players know that these 'supposed' blowout games throw the usage metrics all out of whack.
Then again, if teams rest their starters in the 2nd half, it usually means the damage is already done and fantasy points were accumulated in a whirlwind. Who knows, the oddsmakers could be laying out a trap day and every game could come down to a last second shot? That's the beauty (and curse) of tonight's slate.
Tonight's Headline Games
The common sentiment would be to avoid Indiana Pacers players such as Victor Oladipo ($7,800) Tuesday because they are in a blowout spot vs. the Phoenix Suns (+8.5). Indiana plays their first home game since New Year's Eve and have been off since Friday.
Do the Los Angeles Lakers (-7) absolutely destroy the Chicago Bulls at the Staples Center? Chicago lost by 37 at Golden State Friday night, which cracked usage wide open for both teams.
The Miami Heat go on the road for the first time since a 24 point loss in Atlanta on January 6th. Do the Milwaukee Bucks (-8.5) try to pull a Dallas Cowboys' Demarcus Lawrence and take Miami's soul tonight?
The Golden State Warriors could be in the only close game of the night as they are -1 favorites at the Denver Nuggets.
Guards
Kevin Huerter (DK: $4,800, FD: $5,500 Y! $16)
There are a couple reasons to like Kevin Huerter vs. OKC tonight, the 1st of which being that the Hawks are a bit banged up. This means Huerter's streak of 35+ minutes in four straight games should stay in tact regardless of if the Thunder get out to a big lead in Atlanta. Huerter's field goal attempts are also appealing (14+ in 5 of 7). Factor in that OKC gives up 35+ to SG starters and Huerter's value increases even more.
Tyreke Evans (DK: $3,800 FD: $4,000 Y! $10)
Tyreke Evans should see solid court time tonight whether the Pacers get a big victory over Phoenix or not. That's because the backcourt is very thin with both Darren Collison (leg) and Cory Joseph (thigh) on the injury report. Evans is also well rested (+15%), in an up paced game (+72%), and has received at least a dozen field goal attempts the last two games. All signs point to an upside night.
Malcolm Brogdon (DK: $5,700 FD: $6,200 Y! $22)
Khris Middleton (DK: $6,800 FD: $7,400 Y! $29)
It's either Malcolm Brogdon or Khris Middleton tonight as the Bucks look for a double digit win over the Heat. Giannis Antetokounmpo is nursing a quad injury and his usage should be limited as the Bucks play Wednesday in Memphis as well. Brogdon is $1,000 less than Middleton and is on a nice consistent run with five straight games of 30+ fantasy points. Middleton has 30+ in 9 straight games and could have better rebounding numbers vs. the Heat.
Forwards
Richaun Holmes (DK: $4,000, FD; $4,600 Y! $14 )
Phoenix could be in a rough spot Tuesday vs. a Pacers team playing their first game at home of 2019. Indiana has had 3 nights off and opened as 12 point home favorites. All of that is good news for Phoenix' Richaun Holmes who has only been held back by usage lately. Holmes had 24 fp in 18 minutes Saturday vs. Denver and went for 37 and 30 fp the two games prior while averaging 23 minutes of playing time. Indiana gives up almost 20 fp a night to PF reserves but Holmes should far exceed that.
DeAndre' Bembry (DK: $4,500, FD: $5,400 Y! $15 )
There should be minutes available for DeAndre' Bembry on Tuesday if the Hawks can keep things close as +8 home underdogs vs. Oklahoma City. Bembry should see good usage either way as Atlanta front court players Dewayne Dedmon, John Collins, and Taurean Prince are also all on the injury list. Bembry has scored in double figures in 6 of the last 7. It can also be a productive night on the boards vs. an OKC team allowing 5.8 reb/game to SF starters.
Bobby Portis (DK: $4,500 FD: $5,000 Y! $17)
The Staples Center should bring out the beast in Bobby Portis on Tuesday - if he gets the minutes. In a similar marquee game Friday night vs. Golden State, Portis went for 16 points and 4 rebounds in just 16 minutes. He also accused Kevin Durant of trying to purposely injure him in that game. Portis will be fresh after sitting out Saturday at Utah because of a sore elbow. He's probable - and probably fired up - vs. the Lakers.
Centers
Nikola Jokic ( DK: $10,300, FD: $11,100 Y! $48)
Is Nikola Jokic starting to be the "James Harden of Centers" in that you roster him every time and just fill in the pieces around? That definitely seems to be the case today as Jokic is up against Golden State, a team that gives up a ton of points to the C position. Jokic has had 67+ fantasy points in three of his last four home games. Jokic has had 8+ rebounds in 10 straight, has scored in double figures in each of those, and has 8+ assists in 6 during that span. A triple double is not only possible vs. the Warriors - it's probable.
Wendell Carter, Jr. (DK: $5,300 FD: $6,000 Y! $15)
During their West Coast road trip, the Bulls don't really have a 1st or 2nd string but more of an 'everybody string.' 10 players logged 13+ minutes Saturday vs. Utah and all 12 went at least 12 the night before at Golden State. This is actually a good thing for Wendell Carter, Jr. as it means he'll get his regular rotation time tonight vs. LA - and that he's fresh even though Chicago is on a big road swing. Most of Carter's fantasy points Tuesday will probably come on rebounds, as the Lakers have given up 14, 18, 17, 19, and 18 boards to the last five centers they've faced.
Gorgui Dieng (DK: $3,100 FD: $3,500 Y! $10)
Minnesota's Gorgui Dieng is a valuable upside play as the Timberwolves (6-15 away) could be in trouble on the road vs. Philadelphia. Either way, the Sixers have given up 33+ to the C reserve position in 3 of the last 5 games. A double-double, or at least a 9/3/9 line isn't out of the realm of possibility, especially as the T'Wolves new coach fine tunes his rotation.
Time will tell if we get the blowouts that are expected tonight. There are some closer expected contests on tomorrow's 8-game slate headlined by the Rockets (aka the Hardenettes) back in action as well as the Celtics trying to get back on track at home vs. Toronto.
