Top NBA Plays 1/17 | A Solid Thursday Buffet
For the past few weeks, Thursday's have been kind of light on the NBA DFS landscape with just 4 and sometimes only 3 games. That's not the case this week, as tonight's card features 5 games. Technically, there are even 6 games, as afternoon hoops tip off with the Knick and Wizards squaring off in London. Storylines are a bit light but as always, the daily fantasy angles are aplenty. Let's dig in and eat up this lineup:
Tonight's Headline Games
The Los Angeles Lakers are still without LeBron James as they visit the Oklahoma City Thunder (-10.5). The last time we saw OKC they were giving up 142 points to Atlanta including 34 points and 14 rebounds to the C position. Sleeper night for LA's Javale McGee ($4,800)
Oddsmakers are expecting a lot of points when the Sacramento Kings visit the Charlotte Hornets (-3) with an O/U of 229.5. When these two teams met up 5 days ago it was just a 104-97 Kings win, however.
The Indiana Pacers are -3 favorites at home vs. the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. When these two teams met up a month ago, Joel Embiid ($10,100) went for 40 points and grabbed 21 rebounds.
Guards
Zach Lavine (DK: $6,500, FD: $6,700 Y! $26)
Everybody is expecting Chicago to get blown out of the mountains tonight vs. Denver but the Bulls haven't played horribly their entire road trip. If Chicago can keep it within 10 points for most of the game it could be a nice bounce back effort for Zach Lavine. The Chicago SG had just 10 points Tuesday after averaging 25 ppg the two games prior. He's getting his shots too, as it took him 21 attempts to get 21 points Saturday vs. Utah. Lavine has 32+ minutes in 4 of his last 6 and went for 28/5/6 when Chicago and Denver met up on Halloween.
Lonzo Ball (DK: $6,400 FD: $7,700 Y! $25)
The Lakers PG has quietly put together back-to-back 40+ point fantasy nights. So can Lonzo Ball make it three in a row vs. OKC? Ball has gotten his points in a bevy of ways, scoring 16 ppg, grabbing 8.5 rpg, and dishing out 7 apg. Kyle Kuzma has struggled scoring a bit on the road lately, which leaves more points available for Ball. Of course with Ball you always worry about the oh-fer like he had January 6th at Minnesota, but you do like the bounce back of 21 points the next night in Dallas. OKC does rank 7th defensively vs. the opposing PG, but Ball's production does increase (+24%) in the type of fast-pace game that the Thunder like to play.
Yogi Ferrell (DK: $3,300 FD: $3,700 Y! $10)
Charlotte doesn't have a whole lot of scoring options outside of Kemba Walker in their game vs. the Sacramento Kings. De'Aaron Fox draws the defensive assignment on Walker and will get either a) fatigued or b) in foul trouble. Hopefully this opens up some minutes for Yogi Ferrell, especially as the Kings travel cross country for the early 7:00 PM ET start. This is also just Sacramento's second road game since December 30th, which means the whole team will probably be a bit sluggish. Ferrell is no doubt a dark horse tonight, but he has scored in double figures in 2 of the last 3 games he's seen over 20 minutes of court time.
Forwards
Jabari Parker (DK: $3,600, FD; $4,900 Y! $13 )
The Bulls are trying to showcase Jabari Parker for any possible trade partners and he should have plenty of opportunity to be on display tonight vs. the Nuggets. Denver is a 13 point favorite as Chicago wraps up a nearly two week long West Coast road trip. Parker has seen his usage increase (from zero) and responded with 18 points vs. the Lakers on Tuesday. That court time should be up again Thursday not just because of a potential blowout but because the Bulls' Wendell Carter, Jr. is out with a thumb injury.
Thaddeus Young (DK: $5,800, FD: $6,300 Y! $21 )
The rostering of Thaddeus Young could kind of be looked at as a contrarian play as Philadelphia allows less than 30 fppg and under 6 reb/game to PF starters. Even so, when these two teams met up a little over a month ago, Young had 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Indiana is back at home for the second straight game after being on the road for five. The Pacers' offense is clicking too, as they've gone for 119+ in 6 of 9 games. Over that span Young has six games of 25+ fantasy points, although we want a little more than that Thursday.
Jerami Grant (DK: $5,500 FD: $6,200 Y! $23)
One of the best things you like about OKC's Jerami Grant tonight is his usage. In the last three contests, Grant has two games of 40+ minutes and he's scored 20+ points both times. The Lakers also come to Oklahoma City tonight having given up 35+ point fantasy nights to 2 of the last 3 PF they've faced. This is expected to be a down pace game which benefits the OKC forward even more as his production increases 27% in slow-it-down affairs.
Centers
Deandre Ayton ( DK: $6,600, FD: $7,200 Y! $28)
His price has dropped a bit, especially after a 28 and a 16 point fantasy night over his last three, but now might be the time to pounce on Deandre Ayton. The Suns C is up against a Toronto team that is on a B2B after losing a 117-108 contest at Boston last night. Boston C Al Horford had a 24 point, 7 rebound night vs. the Raptors' Serge Ibaka who logged 33 minutes. Ayton should be rested with a night off and ready for a bounce back evening as he had 18 boards vs. the Raptors in early November.
Mason Plumlee (DK: $4,400 FD: $5,000 Y! $16)
People are iffy on Denver's Nikola Jokic tonight after a down game vs. the Warriors - especially for the $10,600 price. The big question is how much Jokic will even play, as Denver is a 13 point favorite at home over Chicago. Either way, there should be 20-25 minutes available for Mason Plumlee. The Bulls are fatigued after being on a West Coast road trip for the last 11 days with one more game to get through before heading home. Plumlee can break out the occasional ceiling game as evidenced by his 17 point, 12 rebound night a week ago vs. the Clippers.
Marvin Bagley III (DK:$5,200 FD:$6,100 Y!16)
The Kings' Marvin Bagley III is working his way into the lineup nicely after returning from a knee injury. His fantasy production has slowly increased from 23 to 27 to 29 points and he could be in line for his first 30+ point night Thursday vs. Charlotte. The Hornets are missing their starting C Cody Zeller up front and rank 30th vs. the C position as Bismack Biyombo and Willy Hernangomez platoon the blocks. Bagley had an 11 point, 9 rebound night when the teams met up January 12th.
It's been a busy NBA week (which is good) and it continues tomorrow with a 7-game card. These 6-7 game nights are just about perfect, as there's not an overflow but you're also not scraping. We will see how it goes tonight with a somewhat lack of star power outside Embiid, Westbrook, and Leonard.
