Top NBA Plays 1/18 | Putting Our Pants on One Leg at a Time
We've all had nights like Michael Beasley did last night, wearing the wrong shorts as he tried to enter the game. Alas Michael and others, the weekend is on the horizon and it's Casual Friday with a nice 7 game card. Today is National Michigan Day so let's throw on some Wal-Mart khakis and load up on Pistons players, right?
Tonight's Headline Games
Demarcus Cousins ($5,500) makes his Golden State Warriors (-7) debut tonight vs. the Los Angeles Clippers. Nobody knows what to expect from Cousins returning from a knee injury and ownership is just above 1%.
Don't look now, but the Utah Jazz are on fire, winners of 5 straight and 8 of 10. That being said, the Jazz are an interesting DFS option today since they are -15.5 favorites over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The San Antonio Spurs are also playing well, going 7-3 over their last 10. They've got a tough matchup with a visit to the Minnesota Timberwolves (-1.5) who have had the last two nights off.
Are the Boston Celtics (-11) in a letdown spot at home vs. the Memphis Grizzlies? Boston had a thrilling 117-108 win over Toronto on Wednesday as Kyrie Irving ($9,000) put up 27 points and 18 assists.
Guards
Terrence Ross (DK: $5,400, FD: $5,400 Y! $13)
This might be a chase game after Terrence Ross had 24 points in 33 minutes off the bench Wednesday vs. Detroit (OT). That being said, you have to like the way this guy launches. Ross has 20+ points in 3 of the last 5 games. He's also had at least a dozen field goal attempts in 8 of the last 10 contests. Ross even has double digit three point attempts in 3 of the last 5. Brooklyn is solid at defending the perimeter, but the way Ross is firing it up is too hard to pass on.
Jeff Teague (DK: $5,900 FD: $6,200 Y! $20)
It's easy to see why people would be shying away from Jeff Teague tonight (5.94% ownership) after he's posted consecutive 18 fantasy point games. There's potential for a ceiling game Friday, however, as Minnesota is back home and Teague has a favorable matchup vs. the Spurs. San Antonio is 30th defensively vs. the PG position over the last five games - although that did come against Russell Westbrook (2), Kemba Walker, and Luka Doncic. The Spurs still rank 20th vs. the PG overall. Teague also has two 45+ point fantasy nights across his last four home games.
Jaylen Brown (DK: $4,300 FD: $4,400 Y! $20)
Jaylen Brown should see a lot of minutes tonight - what he does with them remains to be seen. Boston is not only heavy favorites at home vs. Memphis, they need to preserve their resources for a Saturday night contest in Atlanta. Brown logged 32 minutes Monday vs. Brooklyn and responded with 22 points and 6 rebounds. That was his second 22+ point scoring night over the last five games. The Grizzlies are 1-9 their last 10 games and Brown should have a peak night.
Forwards
Rodney Hood (DK: $4,300, FD; $4,300 Y! $10 )
Rodney Hood has played well lately with consecutive 28 point fantasy nights. Hood is up against his old squad, the Jazz as well. Cleveland players are a tough call tonight, as they play in their 5th straight road game and have a contest with Denver tomorrow night. Tristan Thompson joins a growing Cavs injury list which should help with Hood's usage. These two teams played two weeks ago and Hood had 12 points and 5 rebounds. That production should increase with Thompson and Larry Nance missing from that game and for the fact that Hood is going back to Utah. The Jazz do give up 30+ fppg to SF starters.
JaMychal Green (DK: $5,300, FD: $5,600 Y! $14 )
The Grizzlies are in a free fall with a 1-9 record over their last 10 games. That doesn't mean JaMychal Green hasn't played outstanding though. The PF should have a solid rebounding night vs. the Celtics, as he's pulled in double digit boards in 3 of the last 4. Boston is a hefty 11 point favorite tonight, which should mean a lot of minutes for Green off the bench. Both the Grizzlies and Celtics have games tomorrow night as well, so we should see plenty of reserves in action today.
DeMarre Carroll (DK: $5,100 FD: $5,000 Y! $15)
Most people doubt that DeMarre Carroll will continue his recent hot streak Friday night vs. Orlando but there are signs that point to an up game. Carroll has put up back-to-back 32+ fantasy point games. He's getting more shots with a dozen or more field goal attempts in 5 of 8 games. Carroll logged 34 minutes Wednesday vs. Houston (OT) but that usage should continue with Jared Dudley out vs. Orlando. Carroll scored 22 vs. the Rockets and also had a 14 rebound night two games ago vs. Toronto, so he can get fantasy points in a variety of ways.
Centers
Demarcus Cousins ( DK: $5,500, FD: $4,600 Y! $20)
Why not, right? It's debut night for Demarcus Cousins on the road at the LA Clippers. Since Golden State has done whatever they've wanted lately (25+ point victories in 3 of 5) wouldn't it be a good idea to get their shiny new toy integrated into the lineup? The Clippers are the perfect team to do that against, ranking last defensively vs. the C position. Rudy Gobert just had a 22 rebound game vs. the Clippers and Andre Drummond grabbed 21 boards vs. them three games ago. Cousins has great upside, especially for the price.
Ante Zizic (DK: $3,700 FD: $4,200 Y! $10)
You can't beat the value on Ante Zizic on Friday - unless the Cavs get blown out by a red hot Utah team and he sits out the entire 2nd half. Otherwise, Tristan Thompson is out Friday with a foot injury (joining Larry Nance) which means Zizic gets the start. Zizic has actually performed well recently, scoring 18 and 16 while grabbing 8 rebounds in 2 of the last 3 games. The Cavs are probably going to lay an egg tonight playing in their 5th straight road game and on the 1st leg of a B2B, but they are really short on bigs right now...and somebody has to play on the blocks.
Jarrett Allen (DK:$6,100 FD:$7,200 Y!22)
Is Jarrett Allen becoming an integral part of the Nets offense - or has he seen an improvement lately just because of who the opponents were? Either way, it's hard to argue with the value available on Allen considering he's had a 61 and a 47 point fantasy night the last two games. Allen attempted a whopping 19 field goals last game vs. Houston and grabbed 24 boards while logging 43 minutes in an OT game. Did that usage drain the big man for tonight - or invigorate him?
