Top NBA Plays 1/22 | The Calm Before (During) the Storm

There's a wintry mix making it's way across the Midwest but that weather shouldn't affect any games or travel on tonight's NBA slate. Tomorrow's 10-game card, where 6 contests are being held in the Midwest or East Coast, could be another story. We'll cover that more in tomorrow's newsletter once we find a new hamster to help run the Doppler. Until then, let's shovel our way through today's Tuesday 4-pack.

Tonight's Headline Games

There's a lot of back-to-back involved games on tonight's docket. The Sacramento Kings are one of them, as they looked tired and bruised in yesterday's loss to the Nets. Might want to tread lightly on Toronto Raptors (-10.5) players (starters) as this one could be a blowout.

Is Karl-Anthony Towns ($10,600) tonight's top Center position play even though the Minnesota Timberwolves (-4.5) are on the road at the Phoenix Suns? Towns had 30 and 12 when the teams met two days ago.

Both the Portland Trail Blazers and Oklahoma City Thunder are in leg two of a back to back when they met up at the Chesapeake Energy Arena. OKC has an edge since they had an early start yesterday and cruised to an 18 point win over the Knicks.

Luka Doncic ($8,400) had 32 points when the Dallas Mavericks and Los Angeles Clippers last met up on December 20th. A lot of Mavs should be in play, as LAC has seen a lot of struggles vs. the front court this season.

Guards

CJ Miles (DK: $3,400, FD: $3,700 Y! $10)

CJ Miles has strung together back-to-back strong outings for the Raptors, posting 21 and 25 fantasy points, scoring a combined 27 points above his projections. Even more impressive is that Miles has posted those numbers while playing just 17 minutes each game. He should see that court time increase today as the Kings come to Toronto on the second leg of a B2B. The Raptors should also increase their bench output this game, as they travel to Indiana for a contest with the Pacers on Wednesday.

Derrick Rose(DK: $6,300 FD: $6,600 Y! $22)

Minnesota's Derrick Rose is on his all-star game campaign tour and that should continue vs. the Suns. Rose hit the game-winner with 0.9 seconds left to beat Phoenix 116-114 on Sunday. That came after he dropped 29 of his total 31 points in the second half. Rose played 37 minutes as Tyus Jones is out and Jeff Teague has been battling an illness.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (DK: $4,600 FD: $3,900 Y! $14)

One thing you have to like about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the amount of shots he's getting since Lou Williams has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury. SGA has gone 3-15 and 7-17 the last two games and has averaged 40 minutes of court time. A lot of people will be chasing Patrick Beverley after his 54 point fantasy night Sunday but Gilgeous-Alexander could easily step into that role Tuesday.

The Mavs have some struggles against the PG position.

Forwards

Norman Powell (DK: $3,800, FD; $3,900 Y! $10 )

The Raptors have a very winnable game Tuesday vs. the Sacramento Kings on a B2B. Toronto must also preserve their resources a bit as they travel to play a streaking Pacers team tomorrow. All that should lead up to a solid amount of court time for Norman Powell. The Toronto SF had 14 points and 4 assists in 19 minutes Saturday vs. Memphis. There will be a lot of backups on the court in this game today and Powell has just as good of a chance as anybody to deliver that value 25-30 point fantasy night.

Justin Jackson (DK: $3,500, FD: $3,700 Y! $10 )

The Kings had one of the fastest paces in the league through the first half of the NBA season but it looks like that style of play is starting to catch up with them. Sacramento was outscored 68-34 in the 2nd half vs. the Nets yesterday (9 points in the 4th quarter) and now must play on a B2B in Toronto. Long story short, Sacramento is probably going to get whitewashed. Justin Jackson saw 29 minutes of court time yesterday and should see even more usage today. Jackson had a 14/5 night and will be playing largely against Toronto backups, as the Raptors have a game at Indiana Wednesday.

Kelly Oubre, Jr. (DK: $5,600 FD: $6,100 Y! $20)

Kelly Oubre, Jr. has outperformed his projections for four straight contests, going over 30 fp each game. What's more impressive is that all four of those outings have come on the road. The Suns are back home and Oubre has gone for 52 and 47 fantasy points his last two back in Phoenix. Oubre, Jr. had 18 points and 8 boards vs. the Timberwolves on Sunday. Those numbers should actually improve as the two teams head back to the desert for today's rematch. Minnesota is also 30th defensively vs. SF reserves.

There's a lot to like about Oubre, Jr. even off the bench

Centers

DeAndre Jordan ( DK: $6,400, FD: $7,000 Y! $24)

There's value on DeAndre Jordan today almost for the rebounding potential alone. The Mavs are up against the Clippers who have allowed 14, 22, 16, and 21 boards to the C position over the last four games. DJ has four games of 14+ rebounds over his last five outings. He's also scored 15 points in back-to-back contests, which were also road games. Dallas is back home but they are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights. Monday vs. Milwaukee, Jordan logged 31 minutes and his production does drop nearly 40% in the B2B. That being said, for the price and the matchup, there's upside.

How do you not like Jordan vs. his former team the Clippers tonight?

Dragan Bender (DK: $4,000 FD: $3,800 Y! $12)

Everybody probably has the same idea on this one but Dragan Bender is a solid play for Phoenix with DeAndre Ayton and Richaun Holmes out of the lineup. The thing you really like with Bender is the unknown. He played 29 minutes last game and responded with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. Prior to that, the Suns PF/C had played only about 7 total minutes in the month of January. The 31 point fantasy night also came against Minnesota, the same team Phoenix meets up with today - except at home. Bender provides some matchup problems for Karl-Anthony Towns that should be exploited for the cost.

Steven Adams (DK:$6,200 FD:$8,200 Y!29)

Steven Adams is playing on a B2B but it's about as close to not being a B2B as you can get. The Thunder had a 12:30 ET tip in New York yesterday and were back in OKC for the local rib special. Adams played 29 minutes in the big Thunder win. If you can afford Karl-Anthony Towns here, he's the play vs. the banged up Suns front court. Even so, Adams has 40+ fantasy nights in 2 of his last 3 home games and is up against Portland's Jusuf Nurkic who also logged 31 minutes of court time Monday night vs. the Jazz.

That puts a bow on Tuesday's Daily Dribble. We've had back-to-back four game cards to start the week but things get huge tomorrow night. Options will be a plenty in NBA DFS on Wednesday. Until then, feel free to follow Carl Taylor (@dailydogsports) for more sports betting insights and oversights.
