Top NBA Plays 2/12 | How to Play the Wind Down Angle
Some teams will play their last game tonight before 7+ days off for the NBA all-star break. How do you play these games from a DFS perspective? San Antonio, for example, has been on the road for four straight games so far and after tonight's contest in Memphis, has 10 days off. We've all had 'vacation syndrome' at work before - are you super productive or check out mentally at roughly 8:01 in the morning? It's yet another angle to look at as we explore today's 5-game docket.
Tonight's Headline Games
Even with LeBron James ($10, 500) back the Los Angeles Lakers are in a free fall, having gone 3-7 over their last 10 and dropping to 10th in the West. Do the Atlanta Hawks (+5) pose any threat today?
It kind of seems like the wrong team is favored when the Orlando Magic are getting +4.5 points at the New Orleans Pelicans. The Magic have won three straight and the Pelicans are 3-7 over the last 10 - although Anthony Davis is back in the lineup for the 3rd game for New Orleans.
Terry Rozier ($6,900) replaces Kyrie Irving in the lineup tonight as the Boston Celtics visit the Philadelphia 76ers as +6.5 road underdogs.
Guards
Reggie Bullock (DK: $3,400 FD: $4,600 Y! $11) Ownership: 6.1%
The Lakers' Reggie Bullock is in a nice plug-and-play spot for the value, mostly because how bad the Hawks are vs. the shooting guard. Atlanta has allowed at least 33 fantasy points to five straight at that position, which includes 53.5 to Jeremy Lamb, 46.75 to Fred VanVleet, 44.5 to Bradley Beal, and 60.5 to Devin Booker. Bullock had 30 minutes Sunday in his first game since coming over from Detroit and he should be much more comfortable in game two with LA.
Klay Thompson (DK: $6,100 FD: $7,400 Y! $27) Ownership 8.1%
Klay Thompson should, at the very least, have a solid minutes night as the Warriors are expected to be in a somewhat tough contest vs. the Jazz. Utah has won two in a row, 7 of 10, and have climbed into 6th in the Western Conference. Thompson has scored 25+ in four straight games. Utah does rank 1st vs. the SG position but that's why the value is there for the Warriors guard in this one.
Mike Conley (DK: $7,900, FD; $8,700 Y!:$33 ) Ownership 15.72%
Can Mike Conley get on the right side of a 50 point fantasy night again today? The Grizzlies guard has had back-to-back down nights (31 and 32 points) but prior to that, he posted five straight games of at least 48 fantasy points including 54 vs. the Knicks on February 3rd and 52 the next game vs. Minnesota. Conley gets great shot attempts (15+ in 5 of 6) and is up against a Spurs team that has allowed 41+ fantasy points to 3 of the last 4 PG they've faced.
Forwards
Jaylen Brown (DK: $5,100 FD: $5,200 Y! $17) Ownership 16%
Does Boston pull the old tug-of-war trick where they just let go of the rope and let Philadelphia have the win on Tuesday? Kyrie Irving is out for the Celtics and Boston doesn't want to sacrifice Wednesday's back-to-back contest vs. the Pistons trying in vain to beat the Sixers tonight. No matter how the game plays out, Jaylen Brown should be in line for a solid night. Brown has 33, 43, and 25 fantasy points the last three games that Irving has missed and the usage should be there off the bench whether the game with the Sixers is close or a blowout.
Terrance Ross (DK: $5,400 FD: $6,000 Y!: $20) Ownership 15.9%
The Orlando Magic have won three in a row and are just 2 GB of the 8 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Magic aren't a bad upset pick today vs. the Pelicans who have lost 3 of 10. If Orlando does stay competitive tonight, expect a big outing from Terrance Ross. Anthony Davis and the New Orleans post game will diminish the effectiveness of Nikola Vucevic so Ross should be able to get back on the scoring track. His last two games have been 18 and 15 point outings but prior to that, Ross put up 32 and 26 points. The Pelicans rank 27th in the league in scoring and Orlando has put up 120+ in 3 of 4.
Kyle Kuzma ( DK: $6,000, FD: $6,700 Y! $21) Ownership 8.84%
There are going to be some points scored in the Lakers / Hawks matchup, as the over/under is listed at 236.5. You have to like Kyle Kuzma to get at least a good chunk of that offense going, as he's launched 21 shot attempts in each of the last two games. Tonight marks LA's last game before the all-star break, so LeBron James' usage could be limited, especially in a game where the Lakers are 5 point road favorites. Kuzma has went for 39 and 25 points the last two games. Atlanta has also allowed 35+ fantasy points to three of five of opposing SF that included Mikal Bridges (35), Trevor Ariza (42), and Jonathan Isaac (36.25).
Center
Rudy Gobert (DK: $8,200 FD: $9,000 Y!: $38) Ownership 15.64%
Utah wants the outright win over Golden State in their last game before the all-star break. This means Rudy Gobert can play maximum minutes with 10 days off upcoming and his rebounding numbers should be phenomenal. 3 of the last 5 centers that Golden State has faced have posted rebounding numbers of 14, 12, and 20. Gobert just put up a 21/13 night vs. San Antonio and has at least a dozen rebounds in four straight outings. Throw in an incentive to dominate Draymond Green after a social media beef and it should be a big night for the Jazz big man.
Utility Player
Trae Young (DK:$6,700 FD:$7,400 Y!29) Ownership 15.15%
Tonight's lineup leaves $7,900 available to spend on a utility player, which means take a chance on the upside of Trae Young. The rookie is going to want to show off vs. LeBron James and the Lakers like he did in November with a 20 point, 12 assist night. Atlanta just bought out Jeremy Lin which should mean great usage continuing for Young moving forward. Prior to last game's 9 field goal attempts, Young had hoisted 15, 14, 13, 21, and 20 shots in the five games before. Expect a high attempt night vs. LA (24th vs. PG) today.
Options are a bit limited with a 5 game card today but there's a huge 11 game card on deck for Wednesday. Until then, feel free to follow Carl Taylor (@dailydogsports) for more daily fantasy and sports betting insights and oversights.
