Top NBA Plays 2/14 | Treating This Card Like a Sweetheart
It's Valentine's Day and unfortunately Kevin LOVE isn't in action tonight. That's like Justin SMOAK not playing for the Blue Jays on April 20th. The NBA slate as a whole is kind of lonely on this day of romance, with just 3 games on the card. It's the kind of a docket only a mother could love, with the three games being Charlotte@Orlando, NY@Atlanta, and OKC@New Orleans.
We'll still buy these three games flowers, take them out to a nice dinner, and treat it like it's the only slate that matters - because it is, as there are no games until next Thursday.
Tonight's Headline Games
Russell Westbrook ($11,600) is the highest priced player on tonight's sheet as the Oklahoma City Thunder visit the New Orleans Pelicans. That price tag comes with good reason, as when these teams met at the end of January, Westbrook had a line of 23/16/17.
It's looking like the New York Knicks are going to go into the all-star break on a 19 game losing streak. The Atlanta Hawks get a free win as long as they're not checked out for vacation already. Maybe New York can fire David Fizdale over the break so DFS players finally get a regular rotation out of Knicks players. Then again, the coach is doing a great job of getting NY the #1 pick in the draft.
Orlando Magic players should see a lot of exposure tonight as they put their 4 game win streak on the line at home vs. the Charlotte Hornets. We could also see a low scoring affair, however, as the O/U is just 215.5.
Guards
Jeremy Lamb (DK: $5,700 FD: $6,600 Y! $21) Ownership: 11.55%
There's good value on Jeremy Lamb on Wednesday, mostly because Charlotte hasn't played since Monday and his production improves 17% when well rested. The Hornets SG has also logged 36 and 38 minutes the last two games and has responded with a 21 and a 24 point night. Lamb can score in a variety of ways, (7 rebounds Monday, 7 assists Saturday) and the Hornets are in a great spot for an upset.
Trae Young (DK: $8,100 FD: $8,400 Y! $32) Ownership 39.15%
There's a crazy price bump for Trae Young on Thursday (+1400) but he's also got a pretty favorable matchup against the defense of Dennis Smith, Jr. (People who roster DSJ might say the same thing about him). Young has a 43 and a 55 point fantasy night over his last three. Also, with the buyout of Jeremy Lin, Young played 38 minutes last game going 6 of 19 but with 14 assists. There should be plenty of assist options available vs. the Knicks defense.
Kadeem Allen (DK: $4,200, FD; $4,000 Y!:$14 ) Ownership 4.84%
One thing you'll notice about the smaller slates is that ownership can go through the roof. For example, Dennis Smith, Jr. had a 75% ownership at one point on Thursday, as he's got a favorable matchup with Atlanta's #30 defense vs. the PG. New York's backup PG Kadeem Allen has just as much (if not more) upside at a much lower price and ownership. The Knicks are on a B2B but Allen and Smith basically split time last night vs. the Sixers. Either way, the whole team is going to be tired, which could lead to a blowout. The last time Allen logged 30+ minutes on February 11th vs. Cleveland, he responded with 25 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds.
Forwards
Terrance Ross (DK: $5,200 FD: $5,800 Y! $18) Ownership 29.85%
It's Valentine's Day, which means it's fitting that we go back to somebody that broke our hearts. Terrance Ross laid an absolute egg last game with 3 points and 2 assists in 17 minutes. That being said, it was a 30 point Magic blowout win in New Orleans. Ross is back home tonight, he's well rested, and should be in a much closer contest vs. the Charlotte Hornets (ORL -3). Ross had three 40+ point fantasy nights in 3 of 6 games prior to Tuesday and he should return to that form tonight.
Marvin Williams (DK: $4,600 FD: $5,700 Y!: $18) Ownership 17.68%
There's not bad value on Marvin Williams tonight considering the a) price b) minutes and c) the fact that there are only three games on the schedule. Williams has logged 31 minutes or more in 5 of 6 games. When Williams is well rested, his production goes up 18%. He can also accumulate fantasy points in a variety of ways, tallying 27 points Saturday vs. Atlanta and grabbing 11 rebounds Monday vs. the Pacers.
Julius Randle ( DK: $7,200, FD: $7,300 Y! $32) Ownership 7.8%
The ownership is nice for Julius Randle today but lately the production has been unpredictable. Granted, he is coming off an ankle injury and in the four games since his return, the PF has put up a 31 and 21 point scoring night as well as a 15 and 12. With one game to go before the all-star break, it's iffy on what to expect from Anthony Davis (3 points, 6 rebounds last game). Jahlil Okafor is also just one game back from an ankle injury. The most consistent front court player for New Orleans lately is Randle, and he should be rewarded for that vs. OKC, who is 28th defensively vs. the PF position.
Center
Mitchell Robinson (DK: $4,100 FD: $5,400 Y!: $14) Ownership 4.28%
The New York Knicks are on 0 days rest but does that actually help the production of Mitchell Robinson? The 20-year-old Robinson played 28:25 vs. the Sixers and you have to think he's in a better turnaround spot than the 30 year old DeAndre Jordan. Robinson had a 14 point, 13 rebound night vs. Philadelphia, which was his 5th straight game in double figures. Robinson has at least six rebounds in five straight outings as well. For the price, you can't beat the upside...until David Fizdale plays Luke Kornet for 40 minutes tonight.
Utility Player
Paul George (DK:$11,800 FD:$12,800 Y!61) Ownership 16.16%
Tonight's lineup leaves $10, 700, which puts Westbrook out of play but has a budget for Paul George. He's coming off an 89 point fantasy night that included 47 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. Jerami Grant (ankle) and Dennis Schroder (personal) missed that game and they'll also be out Thursday. OKC has a 4 game win streak to defend and hopefully New Orleans can keep this game close at home after getting thumped by 30 points to Orlando last game. This is definitely the marquee game of the night and George will want to boost his MVP chances with all eyes on him heading into the all-star break.
Hopefully you won't pinpoint the exact moment your heart breaks tonight. That has nothing to do with Valentine's Day, but something like Russell Westbrook, Paul George, Nikola Vucevic, Kemba Walker, etc. all inexplicably sitting as they prep for the all-star break. It's a week off until the NBA returns next Thursday with a 6 game card.
